Our Story

What began as one family’s hope for healing has grown into a sanctuary that has supported more than 300 women. Over the years, the Sisterhood has become a sanctuary shaped by compassion, community, and the belief that women heal best together. These milestones reflect how our mission has evolved, and the people who made it possible.

2007 — A Vision Takes Root

The Sisterhood of Sobriety began with a shared vision: to create a sanctuary where women could heal from addiction and reclaim their lives. In 2007, Dr. Michael Jordan, a physician and father moved by his daughter’s struggle with alcoholism — purchased a former convent in the San Francisco Bay Area with the hope of creating a safe space for healing.

2012 — A Partnership in Recovery

In 2012, clinical social worker Cristy Lyng, specializing in addiction and trauma-informed care, began volunteering her time. Together, Dr. Jordan and Cristy helped establish a sober-living environment rooted in compassion, accountability, and steady support — the beginning of what would become the Sisterhood.

2007-2023 — A Sanctuary Comes to Life

What began as an informal effort soon grew into a powerful sisterhood. Over the years, more than 300 women have lived, healed, and rebuilt their lives within this home, with the majority maintaining long-term sobriety. Their resilience stands as proof of what becomes possible when women are given safety, structure, and a community that believes in them.

2023 — Becoming a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit

In 2023, the Sisterhood of Sobriety was formally established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, creating new opportunities for growth, stability, and community partnership.

Today, our mission includes securing the long-term future of this home, ensuring that generations of women, and the children and families who walk alongside them, have a lasting sanctuary to recover, rise, and soar beyond addiction.

2024 — Health & Healing Workshop

A hands-on workshop focused on whole-person wellness. Residents, alumni, and supporters came together for guided sessions, conversations, and activities centered on recovery, mindfulness, and long-term well-being.

2024 — 2nd Annual Fundraiser Gala at The Lodge

An evening of generosity, community, and inspiration. Guests gathered to support the Sisterhood’s mission, celebrate the women we serve, and raise essential funds to sustain and grow our home.

2024 — Lea Barbano Memorial Golf Tournament

A heartfelt event created in honor of Lea Barbano, bringing together families, supporters, and alumni. Funds raised directly strengthened our programs and honored Lea’s legacy of resilience and connection.

2025 & Beyond — Preserving Sanctuary for Future Generation

Our commitment moving forward is simple: to preserve our home as a lasting sanctuary, expand programs that support women in recovery, and continue welcoming future generations with care and dignity.
